Sooo often Evangelical types trot out Romans 13 for their blanket endorsement of the very same government that at other times they complain is “too big” and too “liberal” etc. Somehow I don’t think that if Hillary had won there would be such a quick Romans 13 knee jerk reaction!

Of course this goes for those few of us Evangelical types with liberal sensitivities too – only going the other direction. And no matter what, we must factor in a “love for enemies” in our Christian mix.

I am white, middle-class, so for me to hold my own kind to account is a responsibility of the first order. When I see other demographics screwing up the Love of Jesus, I am still tasked with holding them to account, but with greater sensitivity, I think. Likewise, I need to be slow to champion the politics of my kind, even when it is right – to whatever degree that may be.

I am clear that Hillary was Pro Choice, where I am Pro Life. I am aware Trump seems to have made political expedience of this matter, so I don’t really trust his position, nor do I think his position will be useful in honoring God really. On the other hand, I am anti death penalty – or at least in favor of tempering it except in the most egregious circumstances. And I sense that Hillary would have been a political friend to that notion where Trump is probably not.

None of this is simple in the end, and all of it is muddied by something somewhere. Love for the poor, the marginalized, and even our enemies though is pretty straight forward really and does not collect all the political baggage. It just is easy to overlook and ignore, and you can do it while quoting Romans 13 very easily.
